Key Insights

More and more Americans are living in shared housing with others outside family members and close friends, and the experience can sometimes be daunting. Cubbi helps housemates live harmoniously by notifying each other about day-to-day events at home, so that everyone knows what to do and expect. By managing tasks on the app, roommates can communicate about household matters in a direct and simplified manner. Coliving gets a whole lot easier with Cubbi.

Design Process

CalHacks 6.0

Cubbi started as a team project for CalHacks, a 3-day hackathon in UC Berkeley welcoming coders from all levels. The limited time we had created opportunities and challenges for ideation, design, and code execution. After CalHacks, I decided to redesign the initial Cubbi project as a fun solo exercise.

Userflow and Wireframes

Day 1

The first challenge in designing Cubbi was scope. We had several cool features in mind, but decided to slim them down into the most important features for our app: chores, bills, and room reservations. On a whiteboard, we sketched out basic userflow and wireframes, and discussed what to include for each page so that everyone was on board with the details.

Low Fidelity Designs

Day 2

After the wireframes were finished, we digitalized them one by one using Figma. With Figma's live collaboration feature, working on the design together was fun and seamless. While I created the logo and the login page, my teammates carried on to transferring the rest of the pages.

Day 3

The hardest challenge was coding the app itself. We were only able to finish the login page by the afternoon deadline. However, there's a lesson to be learned in dividing the time evenly between designing and coding, as well as not overestimating the scope of the project. I truly enjoyed making Cubbi and I couldn't leave it unfinished, so I decided to improve on it by making a new, polished prototype months after CalHacks.

High-Fidelity Designs

After CalHacks

The full redesign and prototype included significant improvements upon the initial design. While the core ideas remained, I added features to make the app feel more in sync, functional, and user-friendly.

Features

Reserve rooms and furnitures.

No more knocking on bathrooms! Notify your housemates when you plan to use common rooms or shared items through reservations.

Assign a list of chores.

Break down tasks among your housemates so everyone can contribute to a clean and organized home.

Split bills and pay on time.

Assign varying amounts of rent, utilities and other household bills. Schedule your payments and be notified before they are due.

Notes

Cubbi started as a team project for Cal Hacks 6.0 in 2019. The initial design and ideation were completed under three days. The following months, I designed the high-fidelity prototype of Cubbi as a solo redesign exercise.
